Flood Damage Restoration Brisbane

Flood damage in Brisbane? Here’s where to start

Floodwater in your home or business? Call 1800 739 867, help is available 24/7. Reztor’s own team handles flood damage restoration across Brisbane and South East Queensland, from water extraction and moisture mapping through to structural drying and sanitising. The initial assessment is $198.

When creeks rise, drains back up or storm runoff flows in under the doors, floodwater soaks into flooring, wall linings, cabinetry and contents. It also brings mud, debris and contaminants with it. Flood damage restoration is the work of making the property safe, removing the water and affected materials, cleaning and sanitising, and drying the structure so repairs can go ahead. This page explains what to do right now, what our team does on site, and how we support your insurance claim.

What to do right now

  1. Put safety first. Don’t go back inside until authorities say it’s safe. Never walk or drive through floodwater, and watch for damaged floors, ceilings and stairs.
  2. Keep clear of power. Don’t touch switches, power points or appliances that may be wet. Only turn off power at the switchboard if you can reach it without standing in water. If in doubt, stay out and call a licensed electrician.
  3. Treat floodwater as contaminated. Keep children and pets away, wear gloves and closed shoes, and wash your hands well afterwards.
  4. Take photos for your insurer. Photograph each room, the water level marks on walls, damaged contents and the outside of the home before you move or throw anything out. Note the date and time.
  5. Call your insurer and call us. Let your insurer know about the damage, then call 1800 739 867 so we can talk you through the next steps.

What our team does: flood damage restoration step by step

  1. Safety and assessment. We check for hazards, confirm the water source has stopped, and note the affected rooms, materials and water level line.
  2. Water extraction. We remove standing water and mud from floors and accessible areas with commercial extraction equipment. Learn more about water extraction in Brisbane.
  3. Moisture mapping. We take moisture readings in floors, walls, skirting boards and cabinetry and compare them with dry areas, so we know how far the water has travelled, including where you can’t see it.
  4. Removing what can’t be saved. Floodwater often means soaked carpet and underlay, insulation, and the lower section of plasterboard need to come out. We explain what we recommend and why before anything is removed.
  5. Cleaning and sanitising. Affected surfaces are cleaned and treated with suitable antimicrobial products to reduce contamination and odour before drying starts.
  6. Structural drying. Air movers and dehumidifiers are placed to suit the materials being kept. See our structural drying page for how this works.
  7. Monitoring and records. We return to take readings and adjust equipment until materials reach their drying goals, keeping photos and notes along the way.

We can’t give a fixed drying time before checking the property. How high the water rose, how long it sat, the building materials and the weather all play a part.

Carpets, floors and contents after a flood

Carpet and underlay soaked by floodwater are usually removed for health reasons rather than dried. Timber floors, kitchen cabinets and built-in wardrobes need careful checking, because water wicks up into them and can stay hidden. Read more about flooded carpets in Brisbane and wet carpet drying after clean-water leaks.

For contents, we help you separate items that may be cleaned from those that are unsafe to keep, and we record what is discarded so your insurer has a clear list.

Insurance help

Flood cover is often a separate part of a home insurance policy, so check your policy or ask your insurer early. Before throwing anything out, ask whether your insurer wants photos, samples or an assessor visit. We provide photos, moisture readings and clear notes about the extraction, removal and drying work, and we can talk with your insurer or assessor. Reztor is a Direct Panel Member for Suncorp. Your insurer decides cover and payment.

Flood restoration or flood clean-up?

Flood damage restoration covers the whole job, from extraction and removal through to sanitising, structural drying and monitoring. If your main concern is the clean-up itself, such as mud, debris and contaminated surfaces after floodwater, see our flood clean-up page. If the water came from inside the home, such as a burst pipe, a leak or storm water through the roof, see water damage clean-up in Brisbane or our page on burst pipe water damage.

Flood damage restoration: frequently asked questions

Is floodwater always treated as contaminated?

Yes. Water that has come in from outside, from rising creeks, overland flow or storm runoff, can carry sewage, soil, chemicals and bacteria. We treat it as contaminated, which affects what can be kept, how surfaces are cleaned and how the area is sanitised before drying.

Can I start cleaning up before you arrive?

Only if it is safe. Keep clear of electrical hazards and floodwater, wear gloves and closed shoes, and take photos before you move or throw anything out. Don’t run household fans in rooms affected by floodwater, because they can spread contaminants.

Do I need to remove the plasterboard and flooring?

Not always. Some materials can be cleaned and dried, while others, such as soaked insulation, saturated plasterboard or carpet underlay affected by floodwater, usually need to come out. We check moisture readings and the water level line, then explain what we recommend and why before anything is removed.

How long does flood damage restoration take?

There is no fixed time. It depends on how high the water rose, how long it sat, the building materials, the weather and how much needs to be removed. We monitor moisture readings during drying and keep you updated on progress.

Will my insurance cover flood damage?

It depends on your policy. Flood cover is often separate from storm or accidental damage cover, so check your policy or ask your insurer. Your insurer decides cover. We provide photos, moisture readings and notes about the work to support your claim, and we are a Direct Panel Member for Suncorp.
